Customer Review: Looks nice but is not real copper

I have owned one of these and two of the smaller dishes for about a year now and unfortunately have to say that I have not been very satisfied. I do not believe these are real copper and are instead some kind of metal covered with a copper looking coating.
The first time we used them, we placed the water in the base of the double boiler and heated it with a sterno. Everything went well and the guests seemed quite impressed with the look of the dish. However when when we went to clean the dishes that night the double boiler had turned white on all three units. We tried everything to clean it but the nothing worked, we then tried to buff it with brasso and slowly the copper just chipped away leaving a dark aluminum looking coating underneath. When I contacted the company about these not being copper I got some vague answer with the offer to "re-electrolyze" them again so that they get they original look. We were told that under no circumstance should we use Brasso as these dishes have a protective coating on them. I have real copper pans and use brasso on them all the time and it immediately restores their luster. So I was a little surprised by that statement. We thought carefully about sending them back but decided to keep them as the inside double boiler is not visible to guests when being used with food in it.
6 months later we went to use the dishes again only to find the top cover on two of the units all crackled and pitted. Tried cleaning them with soap but to no avail, it would appear that whatever coating they use just cracks away over time. This time we dared not use the Brasso as we did not want to make it worse.
We are very disappointed with these. We have two of the smaller chafing dishes and the large oval one and now find ourselves in a position where they are no longer presentable for guest. If these had been real copper a quick coat of Brasso would have brought them back but instead all you do is remove the copper looking paint to reveal an ugly dark metal underneath.
I wish the company had been more forthcoming with the fact that this is "fake" copper or copper plated so that we could have made a more informed decision about the purchase. I suspect their key word "Decor copper" is their way of telling us this is not real. I gave it two stars instead of one as we did get at least one dinner out of them but feel that they should have lasted more than 1 year.
